PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing 2-alkylphenol of high purity that is useful as an intermediate material for perfume, agrochemical, UV-absorber, antioxidant or the like in high yield in no need of complicated operation for separation and purification after the reaction. SOLUTION: When 2-alkylphenol is produced by reaction between phenols and olefins in the presence of a solid acid catalyst, a polar organic compound or a polar organic compound and water or water in an amount more than 3 wt.% based on the solid acid catalyst are added to the reaction mixture.
