Spongosine for inhibiting pain perception in mammals suffering from neuropathic and inflammatory pain even when administered at doses expected to give concentrations well below those known to activate adenosine receptors. Thus, spongosine is used to treat neuropathic and inflammatory pain without causing the significant side effects associated with administration of other adenosine receptor agonists.
