PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vertical alignment liquid crystal display device having high response speed, high display quality, and high transmissivity. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display device having a first substrate, a second substrate opposed to the first substrate, a liquid crystal layer enclosed between the first and the second substrates, a first electrode formed on the first substrate, a second electrode formed on the second substrate, a first alignment layer formed on the first substrate so as to cover the first electrode and a second alignment layer formed on the second substrate so as to cover the second electrode, the first and the second alignment layers align liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal layer in a direction substantially vertical to the surface of the liquid crystal layer in a non-driving state where driving voltage is not applied between the first and the second electrodes and a plurality of directional patterns are formed toward the same azimuth on the first substrate.
