PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element excellent in alignment stability in which a ferroelectric liquid crystal is rendered into a monostable state. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display apparatus comprises: a first photo-alignment treated substrate having a first substrate, an electrode layer formed on the first substrate, and a first photo-alignment layer formed on the electrode layer; a second photo-alignment treated substrate having a second substrate, an electrode layer formed on the second substrate, and a second photo-alignment layer formed on the second electrode, wherein both substrates are disposed to allow the first photo-alignment layer and the second photo-alignment layer to oppose to each other; and a liquid crystal layer containing a ferroelectric liquid crystal and a polymerized product of a polymerizable monomer, held between the first photo-alignment layer and the second photo-alignment layer.
