PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a driving method for a semiconductor laser element that can make an extinction ratio large while suppressing distortion of a light output waveform small against variation in threshold current value of the semiconductor laser element. SOLUTION: In this driving method, the relation is found between a delay time Td of laser oscillation timing of a laser diode LD behind rising time T<SB>0</SB>of a modulated current Im<SB>1</SB>supplied to the laser diode LD in addition to a bias current Ibias and the bias current Ibias, and then the bias current Ibias set to a value which does not exceed a threshold current value Ith determined based upon the relation, and the modulated current Im<SB>1</SB>are supplied to the laser diode LD, which is driven.
