<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an economic running control device capable of actuating means for securing a braking force only when needed in response to the condition of a vehicle itself during idling stop on a sloping road. <P>SOLUTION: When a predetermined economic running condition is satisfied during operation of an engine, after a road gradient is detected, a brake master cylinder pressure (A) and a brake booster negative pressure (B) required for maintaining a stopping condition are found (steps 101-103). Then, these values (A) and (B) are compared with an actual brake master cylinder pressure and an actual brake booster negative pressure of the vehicle, it is judged whether the stopping condition can be maintained or not. When the condition is satisfied, idling stop is done (steps 104, 105).
