PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a substrate for display element having a satisfactory gas barrier property with respect to the substrate for display element used in a display such as a flexible display. SOLUTION: The substrate for display element has at least two layers of resin layers. At least one layer of the at least two layers of resin layers is a liquid crystal polyester resin layer substantially made of a copolymer having a functional group reactive with liquid crystal polyester (A) and liquid crystal polyester (B), and at least one layer of the at least two layers of resin layers is a resin layer other than the liquid crystal polyester resin layer. At least one layer of liquid crystal polyester resin layer is brought into contact with at least one layer of the resin layer other than liquid crystal polyester resin layer, wherein average roughness (Ra) of the side of a resin layer other than the liquid crystal polyester resin layer is set to be 5 nm or less.
