PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a timing generator which has a new constitution and is applicable to drive a charge-coupled device type solid-state image pickup element. SOLUTION: The timing generator has a mask circuit to which a mask enabling signal including information for masking a first clock signal and at least a partial clock pulse of the first clock signal is inputted, and which outputs a second clock signal having at least the partially masked clock pulse of the first clock signal; a vertical driving signal generation circuit which generates a vertical driving signal for driving a vertical charge transfer path of the solid-state image pickup element on the basis of the second clock signal; and a horizontal driving signal generation circuit which generates a horizontal driving signal for driving a horizontal charge transfer path of the solid-state image pickup element on the basis of the first clock signal, and also, generates the mask enabling signal so that the clock pulse of the first clock signal included in a period of driving the horizontal charge transfer path is masked.
