PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method of a glass substrate for an information recording medium, the method restraining the generation of curvature and chipping, improving flatness and reducing the number of times of washing, and also provide a glass substrate for an information recording medium. SOLUTION: A glass substrate for an information recording medium is chemically reinforced by means of chemical reinforcement processing 22 after a glass base plate 11 is processed to form a disk-shaped substrate by shaping 12. Then, after the substrate is washed by washing processing 16, the substrate is subjected to lap polishing processing 15 or the like. In the lap polishing processing 15 or the like, the surfaces of the glass base plate 11 are polished with a pair of surface plates so that the main surface on the front side of the glass base plate 11 and the main surface on the back side may be equal in polishing quantity.
