PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document management device, a control method therefor and a program, capable of certainly retrieving document data printed together with index information on a storage medium. SOLUTION: The index information for retrieving the document data stored in a hard disk is added to the document data in a bar code format, and information of the effect that the document data printed together with a bar code as the index information are printed together with the bar code is stored. When processing for document deletion, document movement or the like accompanied by a change of the index information shown by the bar code is required, the document deletion is prohibited, or a warning message is issued to the document movement.
