PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a valve timing controller enabling the individual setting of the spring loads and the set loads of the springs of first and second lock mechanisms. SOLUTION: A vane member 3 rotatable relative to a timing sprocket 1 is normally and reversely rotated by selectively feeding and discharging a hydraulic pressure to and from spark-advance side/spark-retard side hydraulic pressure chambers 17 and 18 to convert the relative rotational phase of the sprocket to a camshaft 2. A lock means locking the vane member to a housing 5 is formed of two lock mechanisms 27 and 28, and the lock members 30 and 33 of these two lock mechanisms are axially engaged with and disengaged from each other by a relative pressure between hydraulic pressures in the hydraulic pressure chambers and the spring forces of the first and second springs 31 and 34.
