Liquid crystalline medium with a nematic phase comprises a component A comprising one or more pyran compounds (I). Liquid crystalline medium (A) with a nematic phase comprises a component A comprising one or more pyran compounds of formula (I). R1>H, 1-7C (preferably 1-5C) alkyl or alkoxy, alkenyl, alkenyloxy, alkynyl or 2-7C alkynyloxy, where -CH2- group is replaced by -O-, -C = O- or -S-, no two -O- atoms are connected directly, and all six types of groups are optionally replaced by halo; Z1>-CH2-CH2-, -CH2-O-, -CF2-O-, -COO-, -OCO- or a single bond; X1>halo, fluorinated alkyl, -1-5C alkoxy or -alkenyl, alkenyloxy or 2-4C oxyalkyl; and Y1>1>, Y1>2>H or F.
