A aqueous solution of pyridoxylated, polymerized haemoglobin is used in the manufacture of a composition for preserving an organ for transplant, in the manufacture of a transfusion for solution for treating diseases or conditions requiring a resuscitative fluid, intravascular volume expander or exchange transfusion or in the manufacture of an acellular red blood cell substitute for treating trauma, myocardial infarction, stroke, acute anaemia, hypoxemia, hypoxia or end stage hypoxia. The haemoglobin comprises about 16% of haemoglobin polymer with a molecular weight of about 128 kD, about 26% of haemoglobin polymer with a molecular weight of about 192 kD, and about 58% of haemoglobin polymer with a molecular weight of about 256 kD.
