An LCD and a method for manufacturing the same are provided to prevent a light shielding layer from overlapping a display part of the LCD, thereby suppressing the reduction of the aperture ratio, by forming the light shielding layer using a bank pattern. A color filter layer(33) is formed above a glass substrate(32) of a counter substrate(3). A bank pattern(38) is formed of the same material as a red color filter(34), a green color filter(35), and a blue color filter(36) of the color filter layer in the same step. The bank is disposed at the outside of the color filter layer above the glass substrate. A light shielding material is coated in a bank between the bank pattern and the color filter layer to form a light shielding layer(41). The light shielding layer is continuous with the peripheral edge of the color filter layer.
