PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact, inexpensive and log-life protecting unit for suppressing voltage surge generated due to commutation failure in a matrix converter. SOLUTION: In the protecting unit of the matrix converter for directly converting power supplied from a multiphase AC power supply to a multiphase AC load, varistors are connected between a neutral point of a filter capacitor Y-connected at an input of the matrix converter and phases at an output of the matrix converter. Since the number of components is reduced in the voltage surge protector of the matrix converter, and the voltage surge protector is effectively constituted, the size, weight and cost of a system can be reduced.
