PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal device whose excellent aligning property is combined with high reliability. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal device is constructed with a pair of substrates 10, 20 having a liquid crystal 50 interposed in between. Out of the pair of substrates, at least one substrate 10 has an alignment layer 1 on the surface of the liquid crystal 50 side. The alignment layer 1 comprises a single layer containing an inorganic material component and an organic material component. The alignment layer 1 is constructed in such a way that a proportion of the organic material component in the alignment layer 1 increases as going from the substrate 10 side to the liquid crystal 50 side.
