PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a viewing angle switching display device which does not cause flicker even when used for a long period of time, and to provide a terminal device mounting the display device. SOLUTION: The display device 1 comprises a surface light source 2, a viewing angle controlling means 41 to enhance directivity of transmitted light, a switching element 8 to switch between a transparent state to transmit incident light as it is and a translucent white state to scatter incident light to transmit, and a display panel 42, disposed in this order. The frequency F2 of an AC voltage applied to the switching element 8 by a driving unit 21 is controlled to be higher than the driving frequency F1 of the display panel 42. For example, the frequency F2 is controlled to be twice or more of the frequency, preferably n times (n is an integer of 2 or more) of the frequency F1. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
