PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance test accuracy and to reduce a load on an inspector by using an automated tester for checking the operation of a position indicator for a control rod drive mechanism used for perceiving the position of a control rod in a nuclear reactor. SOLUTION: This tester, used for testing the position indicator 100 for the control rod drive mechanism comprising a plurality of reed switches 201 provided at prescribed spaces, is equipped with a position indicator placing stand 300 for placing thereon the position indicator 100 in an operation checking test for the position indicator 100. Also, this tester comprises an inspection magnet 101 for operating the reed switches 201 provided in the position indicator 100 and is equipped with an inspection magnet moving body 3 capable of moving lengthwise of the position indicator 100. Further, this tester is equipped with an automatic control unit 4 connected to the moving body 3 and to the respective reed switches 201 for checking the operation of the reed switches 201 of the position indicator 100 based on the position of the inspection magnet 101 and on signals from the reed switches 201.
