A telecommunication switching station includes telecommunication equipment (24) , a DC power supply (28) having an output connected to the telecommunication equipment, and a plurality of rechargeable DC power supplies (14) connected in parallel with the output of the DC power supply (28) . Each DC power supply (14) includes a pair of power supply terminals (16, 18) , a rechargeable battery (20) , and a bidirectional DC-DC converter module (22) connected between the rechargeable battery (20) and the pair of power supply terminals (16, 18) . The DC power supply (28) provides power to the telecommunication equipment (24) and recharges the plurality of rechargeable DC power supplies (14) . The plurality of rechargeable DC power supplies (14) serve as a back-up for the DC power supply (28) .
