<p>Acrylonitrile polymers and copolymers of uniform molecular weight are produced by polymerizing acrylonitrile in aqueous medium with the aid of a water-soluble oxygen-yielding catalyst, other than a chlorate, e.g. a persulphate, a perborate, or hydrogen peroxide, and sulphur dioxide as an activator present in an amount greater than 1.5 per cent in respect of monomer, and in a molar quantity greater than the molar quantity of catalyst.
