The present invention relates to a method of producing gold nanoprisms. In particular, gold nanoprisms having uniform shapes and edge lengths and thickness are produced utilizing a three step growth process: first, a suspension of gold seed nanoparticles is mixed with a first mixture; second, the resulting solution is mixed with a second solution; third, this resulting solution is mixed with a third solution. The first, second and third solution each comprise a gold salt, a base, a reducing agent and a surfactant.
