The belt tensioner (1) has a lengthwise extending flexible element (7) with a first region (10b) with a part sector connected by a releasable connection (11b) to a part which does not rotate with the shaft unit. The first region is pressed against the shaft unit by the traction force exerted on the second region (10a). After release, the first region can unwind as the shaft unit turns to tighten the belt.
