Provided are an electron transfer compound which is excellent in electron transfer efficiency and is prevented in crystallization, and an organic electroluminescent device using the electron transfer compound which is high in brightness. The electron transfer compound is represented by the formula 1, wherein Ar is a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic group, or a substituted or unsubstituted hetero ring having at least one halogen, nitrogen, oxygen or sulfur atom as a ring member. Preferably Ar is a substituted or unsubstituted quinolyl, isoquinolyl, phenanthrolyl, quinoxalyl, terpyridyl or bipyridyl group. The organic electroluminescent device is provided with an electron injection layer and/or an electron transfer layer comprising the compound.
