PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an article state detecting device capable of achieving simplification of constitution, and shortening device outer size in the carrying direction. SOLUTION: This article state detecting device has, at a detecting action position in a carrying passage by a carrying means, a placement state detecting means B for detecting at least either if height of an article is over set height or not or if a side part in the width direction of the article is off a correct position for carrying outward in the width direction or not, and a pallet existence detecting part 2 positioned at or close to the detecting action position to detect the timing when a forward end part of a pallet P in the carrying direction reaches the detecting action position by the switching from a pallet non-existence detecting state to a pallet P existence detecting state, and detect the timing when a rear end part of the pallet in the carrying direction reaches the detecting action position by the switching from the pallet existence detecting state to a pallet non-existence detecting state.
