PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for displaying chapter information and a recording medium reproducer in which the name of next chapter or the list of chapter name can be displayed while superposed on a reproduced video image without interrupting reproduction. SOLUTION: During video image reproduction of a predetermined title, information of a chapter constituting that title (chapter name of next scene or chapter name list) is displayed while superposed on a reproduced image. When chapter information is displayed by characters using subpicture data, the subpicture data or character image data subjected to bit map development is acquired and stored in correspondence with the chapter number. When information display of a predetermined chapter is requested, information of a requested chapter is displayed by characters while superposed on a reproduced image by using the subpicture data or character image data stored depending on that chapter.
