PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode material for lithium-ion secondary batteries and a method of manufacturing the same, and a negative electrode for lithium-ion secondary batteries using the negative electrode material which have a small irreversible capacity and a large energy density, and is excellent in input-output characteristics and in life characteristics. SOLUTION: This negative electrode material for lithium-ion secondary batteries comprises carbon particles each of which has an interlayer distance (d) of 3.40-3.70Åat a carbon (002) plane determined by an X-ray diffraction device (XRD), and a carbon layer formed on the carbon particle. A ratio (by weight) of the carbon layer with respect to the carbon particle is 0.001-0.1. When Id denotes a peak intensity in the vicinity of 1,360 cm<SP>-1</SP>in profiles determined by laser Raman spectroscopy having a wavelength of 532 nm, and Ig denotes a peak intensity in the vicinity of 1,580 cm<SP>-1</SP>, and furter R denotes a intensity ratio Id/Ig of the both peak, the R is desirable to set within the range of 0.5-1.5.
