A remote controller for an air conditioner and an operating method thereof are provided to intercept battery power when the remote controller is not used, thereby extending the life span of the battery as the main operation power of the remote controller and improving reliability of the product by preventing malfunction of the remote controller. A remote controller for an air conditioner comprises the followings: a battery(50) which supplies an operation power; a remote controller control unit(10) which generates and transmits a control command for controlling the operation of an air conditioner according to the power supplied from the battery(50); and a power converting unit(20) converts the battery(50) into second power according to the control command of the remote controller control unit(20).
