PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a contour emphasizing circuit capable of suitably emphasizing only a contour portion without emphasizing impulse noise. SOLUTION: A differentiation filter operation section 4 performs a secondary differentiation filter operation for digital video data output from an imaging means 9 and a variance operation section 5 calculates variance of the video data for which the secondary differentiation filter operation is performed. A selector section 6 compares the operation result of the variance operation section 5 with an emphasis criterion value A input to a criterion value input means 1, when the operation result of the variance operation section 5 is larger than the emphasis criterion value A, an emphasis degree (k) input to an emphasis degree input means 2 is output as an emphasis degree and when the operation result of the variance operation section 5 is smaller than the emphasis criterion value A, 0 is output as an emphasis degree from the emphasis input means 2. A multiplication section 7 multiplies the emphasis degree output from the selector section 6 by the operation result from the differentiation filter section 4 and an addition section 8 sums up the operation result of the multiplication section 7 and the digital video data and outputs the sum as video data to the outside.
