A surface light source lamp and a backlight unit adopting the same are provided to improve the uniformity of the entire brightness of the backlight unit, by forming a predetermined pattern in a discharge space to improve a relative transmittance. A first substrate(210) is disposed to face a second substrate(220). A discharge material is provided between the first substrate and the second substrate. A plurality of discharge spaces(240,241,242) are defined by a plurality of barriers(250) between the first and second substrates. A voltage is applied to the discharge spaces through electrodes. Control members(260) are provided in the outermost discharge spaces, which are selected among the discharge spaces, to supply the uniformity of brightness.
