LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY DEVICE AND METHOD FOR DRIVING THE SAME

A liquid crystal display and a driving method thereof are provided to achieve optimal image quality by controlling data with clear contrast and the light of a backlight corresponding to the data by detecting the light generated from the outside by using first and second light receiving elements positioned at the front and rear sides. A liquid crystal display includes a liquid crystal panel(102) displaying the data; a first light receiving element(116) positioned on the front side of the liquid crystal panel to detect external light and generate specific spectrum; a second light receiving element(114) disposed in the rear side of the liquid crystal panel to detect the external light and generate specific spectrum; a data conversion unit(118) analyzing luminance by using the specific spectrum and converting the data by using the analyzed luminance; and a backlight control unit(112) generating a backlight brightness dimming signal by using the specific spectrum and the luminance.
