[Also in Division B3] An electrical capacitor with electrodes metallized on dielectric layers has at least one end piece with at least one boundary thereof located contiguously of the edge coatings of the layers and the assembly is dip soldered to bond the edge coatings together and to the end piece. In Fig. 2 four silvered mica capacitor plates with electrode layers 2, 3 overlying the edges and separated by staggered gaps 4 are held together so that the edge silverings of opposite coatings are disposed together, and the plates are bonded by thin brass or copper end pieces 5 with rectangular apertures 6 therein having leads and passing through punched-out loops. The end pieces are bent over (Fig. 3) and dipped in tin/lead solder to bond them to the edges of the coatings, after which the capacitor is impregnated in wax and enclosed in a case of loaded epoxy or phenolic resin (Fig. 6). The lead wires may project axially or the end pieces may be tagged. The perforations may be circular or capillary or may be omitted. In a modification (Figs. 7 to 9, not shown) a single silvered mica plate is enclosed between plain mica plates silvered at the ends, and similar bent-over end pieces and leads are applied over the ends and dip soldered, after which the capacitor is impregnated and encased as before. The Provisional Specification refers to fitting metallized components other than capacitors with similar end pieces. |
