[Also in Division B6] An ornamental fabric-like material comprises a sheet of flexible transparent plastic material from 8 to 40 mils. thick, the upper surface of which is embossed to form elongated continuous parti-cylinders or lenses, then being provided on or adjacent to the lower surface a series of parallel printed coloured lines spaced substantially equally to the lenses and being substantially parallel thereto. The lines may be printed on said lower surface and/or on the upper and/or lower surfaces of one or more further sheets laminated to the first sheet by passing over a heated roller. The lowermost may be opaque or transparent and may be a fabric, the rest of the sheets being transparent; any of the sheets may be coloured. More than one series of lines may be printed on the same or different surfaces, said series being of different colours. The lenses are spaced approximately 60 to the inch, the line spacing varying from 58 to 62 to the inch. The lines may be up to two degrees out of alignment with the lenses. Designs of animals &c. may also be used. The effect is to produce changing colours and design appearance as an observer moves with respect to the material, and different designs may appear to be at different depths, the apparent depth of the material being several inches. In roller apparatus for uniting the sheets a roller may be braked to stretch one of the sheets and modify the spacing of lines printed thereon. |
