A method for controlling the printing operation of a color image forming apparatus is provided to improve the durability and printing speed of the image forming apparatus by forming a visible image using only developing units corresponding to colors required for printing. A method for controlling the printing operation of a color image forming apparatus includes a step of storing image data units divided by colors in a single memory(S10), a step of loading the image data units stored in the memory in the order of color(S20), and a step of operating developing units corresponding to colors of loaded image data(S40). The end of the image data stored in the memory includes information indicating last printing information.
