Class 122(3) [Also in Groups XVIII, XXII and XXVIII] A seal between contacting planar surfaces 12, 13 is effected by a resilient strip 16 housed with lateral clearance in an undercut channel 15, in one of the surfaces, the strip being held in position by the lips 17, 17 of the channel and proud of the surface in its free state, Fig. 1, and compressed into the groove when the surfaces 12, 13 are brought into contact, Fig. 2. The strip, which may be of natural or synthetic rubber, is preferably of solid or hollow circular cross-section in its free state. As applied to a foundry core box of the kind into which the sand is blown by air pressure, sealing strips 16 are housed in intercepting, undercut channels 15 arranged as in Fig. 3 in the top face 12 of the box 21 and co-operate with the under face of the lid 24. Leakage of air between the lid and the flanged nozzle (not shown) for the charging holes 25, 29 is prevented by a further sealing strip 16a arranged, in the manner according to the invention, in an undercut channel surrounding the holes and coacting with the nozzle flange. |
