Monochlorotrifluoroethylene is polymerized at 0 DEG to 40 DEG C., preferably 0 DEG to 10 DEG C., using as initiator a peroxide of formula X2O2, where X represents in equivalents hydrogen, alkali metal or alkaline earth metal, in a reaction medium constituted by solutions in a polar liquid having a pH higher than 7 at the time of starting the polymerization, and effecting the solution of the initiator in the reaction medium in the presence of the monomer to be polymerized. Specified peroxides are hydrogen, sodium, potassium and calcium peroxides. Specified media are aqueous solutions of alkali and buffer salts, and the molecular weight of the polymer may be adjusted by varying the proportion of medium, e.g. water, employed. The catalyst may be introduced into the reaction vessel in a sealed phial which is broken to start the polymerization. Emulsifying agents may also be present. Examples describe the polymerization of monochlorotrifluoroethylene in aqueous media in the presence of (1, 4 and 5) sodium peroxide, (2) sodium peroxide and sodium hydroxide and (3) hydrogen peroxide and sodium hydroxide.
