PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce processing load for capturing a still image from a reproduced video image. SOLUTION: A video image processing apparatus acquires a still image from a video image during reproduction and can record the image in a recording medium. The apparatus is provided with: a reproducing means for applying pull-down conversion to the video image recorded in the recording medium into a top field and a bottom field and reproducing the image as an interlace video image; a detecting means for detecting a superimposed field inserted during pull-down conversion; a storage means having a frame memory region for storing the top field and the bottom field of the interlace video image to be reproduced; and an image capturing means for capturing the still image from the frame memory region, when the top field and the bottom field belonging to the same frame before pull-down conversion exist in the frame memory region, on the basis of a result of detection by the detecting means.
