The device has a light emitting diode (12) carried by an electronic board (6) which supplies the diode with energy. The board is housed in a control panel (1) of a motor vehicle. A window (16) is arranged in a structural unit (3) of the vehicle for the passage of the light from the diode (12) towards an ashtray (2), where the window is closed by a translucent wall (18). A light guide (13) is interposed between the diode and the ashtray and is carried by the control panel.
