A light emitting device and a red light emitting phosphor particle are provided to enhance light emitting efficiency by using red light emitting phosphor particles for emitting light having a wavelength band of 350 nm to 420 nm. A light emitting device comprises a semiconductor light emitting element(3) for emitting light having a wavelength band of 350 nm to 420 nm and a sealing agent(5) for sealing the semiconductor light emitting element. The sealing agent includes Eu ions for dispersing red light emitting phosphor particles. The red light emitting phosphor particles have an average particle diameter of 40 to 200 micrometers and are used for absorbing the light having the wavelength band of 350 nm to 420 nm from the semiconductor light emitting element.
