An apparatus and a method for correcting colors of an image in a display device are provided to reproduce colors of an image through a simplified process. An apparatus for correcting colors of an image in a display device includes a first image converter(11), a color gamut mapping and extending unit(13), and a second image converter(14). The first image converter respectively converts RGB values of a received video signal into standard color stimulus specification values X, Y and Z. The color gamut mapping and extending unit performs color gamut mapping and extension on the standard color stimulus specification values X, Y and Z. The second image converter converts the standard color stimulus specification values X, Y and Z into a displayable video signal based on a characteristic model of a display device.
