<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination device that can supply polarized light in a specified oscillation direction with high efficiency at a high illuminance ratio, and to provide an image display apparatus that can display a bright image with reduced irregularity in brightness. <P>SOLUTION: The illumination device comprises LEDs 11 to 14 as a light source unit to supply light, a uniformizing unit 20 to uniformize the intensity distribution of beams from the LEDs 11 to 14, a polarization converting element 35 as a polarization converting unit to convert light from the uniformizing unit 20 into polarized light in a specified oscillation direction, a superposition optical system 40 to superpose the light from the polarization converting element 35 and guide the light to enter an object surface I to be irradiated. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT |
