PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for registering sector defects of a magnetic disk. SOLUTION: Write/read testing is carried out to extract a plurality of defective sectors. A complementary target sector selectrd from the plurality of defective sectors is set in one of the alignment positions S1 to S4 of a detection window 100. Distance L1 and L2 between defective sectors 103 and 105 included in the detection window and the complementary target sector are calculated. The defective sector 105 of a shortest distance relation is selected as a complimentary opposite sector. A linear complementary state is set between the complimentary target sector and the complementary opposite sector to extract a complementary sector. The complementary sector and an additional sector around the complementary sector are registered as defective sectors to inhibit their use. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
