PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optimal print image by making it possible to position a thermal head for a platen roller even when the thickness, type or the carrying passage of a recording medium is altered. SOLUTION: The positioning device of a thermal head 4 comprises a positioning lever 8 provided rotatably in the thermal head. At some rotary position, the positioning lever 8 positions the thermal head 4 in the tangential direction at the contact (e.g. the vertex) with a platen roller 3. Regulation means (a cam 10, a supporting member 9, an abutting member 11 and a guide member 14) regulate the positioning lever 8 at the rotary position under such a state as a recording medium 1 and an ink ribbon 2 are held between the thermal head 4 and the platen roller 3.
