PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an aqueous dispersion of a fluoropolymer with which a reutilizable fluorine-containing surfactant can be recovered with a small amount of a waste liquor produced during recovery of the fluorine-containing surfactant and the process time is short. SOLUTION: The method for producing the aqueous dispersion of the fluoropolymer comprises adding a nonionic surfactant to an aqueous dispersion of the fluoropolymer which is to be treated and has 20-40 mass% of the fluoropolymer concentration, separating the resultant aqueous dispersion into a phase containing no fluoropolymer and a phase containing the fluoropolymer, removing the phase containing no fluoropolymer and preparing the aqueous dispersion of the fluoropolymer from the phase containing the fluoropolymer. The method for producing the aqueous dispersion of the fluoropolymer is characterized in that the ratio [a/b] of the volume [a] of the phase containing no fluoropolymer to the volume [b] of the phase containing the fluoropolymer is≤1.
