<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform suitable gradation correction with respect to image data, regardless of the presence of face in an image. <P>SOLUTION: A photography scene of image data is discriminated, and a gradation correction method and a first amount of gradation correction to image data are determined based on the scene distinction result. Next, a face region in an image is detected from image data, and a second amount of gradation correction is determined, based on average luminance of a face region. On the basis of the reliability of face detection, a third amount of gradation correction is determined by weighted-averaging of the first amount of gradation correction and the second amount of gradation correction.
