PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device, wherein momentary excessive load current can be suppressed by eliminating extreme changes in the brightness of a liquid crystal panel, before and after connection of the body to other display devices. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device comprises a liquid crystal panel 8 to which image data have been inputted; a white LED 9 for illuminating the liquid crystal panel 8; an image data feature extracting section 2 which extracts, from among the image data, brightness-adjusting signals for adjusting the brightness of the white LED 9; a connection-detecting terminal 12 which detects connection of a TV monitor device 14 other than the liquid crystal panel 8 with the device body; and a gradation control section 101, which when the connection detecting terminal 12 detects connection of the TV monitor device 14, gradually changes the value of the brightness-adjusting signals extracted by the image data feature extracting section 2 to a prescribed value and outputs the changed value to the white LED 9. Thus, when the TV monitor device 14 is connected to the device body, the brightness-adjusting signals, inputted to the white LED 9, can be gradually changed to the prescribed value.
