PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a time division multiplexing method and system, a transmission apparatus, and a receiving apparatus whereby each channel can be identified without the need for embedding a channel identification signal into frames. SOLUTION: An IDP discrimination apparatus 22a identifies a preamble of a broadcast signal 20a, a data part, and an IFG and supplies the preamble and the data part to a 8B/10B converter 24a. The converter 24a converts 8-bit length codes of the preamble and the data part into 10-bit length codes. A particular 10B pattern generating apparatus 30a generates a particular idle pattern in a 10-bit length including an identification signal for denoting a channel of a broadcast signal 20a. A multiplexer 32a applies time division multiplexing to output signals of the apparatuses 24a, 30a. Even in the case of the data signal 20b after the 8B/10B conversion, the 10-bit particular pattern including the channel identification signal is arranged in each of interframe gaps. Buffers 34a, 34b, electrooptic converters 38a, 38b, and an optical multiplexer 40 convert the broadcast signal and the data signal into optical signals and apply time division multiplexing to the optical signals in the unit of 10 bits.
