An apparatus for controlling drive of a reciprocating compressor and a method thereof are provided to stably operate the reciprocating compressor when the reciprocating compressor is initiated or an output capacity of the reciprocating compressor is changed. An apparatus for controlling drive of a reciprocating compressor includes an output capacity determination part(31), an over stroke prevention part(32), and an impedance matching part(33). The output capacity determination part determines an output capacity of the reciprocating compressor. The over stroke prevention part prevents enlarge of a stroke of a motor in the reciprocating compressor generated when the reciprocating compressor is initiated or the output capacity of the reciprocating compressor is converted. The impedance matching part matches an inductance and an impedance of the reciprocating compressor determined by the output capacity determination part.
