A method for setting a rank address in a memory module and a semiconductor memory system are provided to reduce the quantity or number of wires of balls or pins required in addressing a memory chip of the memory module controlled by a memory controller or a chip set. According to a method for setting an address of a rank in a memory module including a number of memory chips(30~33) controlled by a memory controller(20) or a chip set, a first memory chip among the memory chips is set to have a first rank address. A second rank address is generated from the first rank address of the first memory chip, and the second rank address is provided to a second memory chip among the memory chips. The second memory chip is set to have the second rank address, in response to the step of providing the second rank address.
