PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical connector and an assembling method of the optical connector that allows simplification of assembly, improvement in the reliability, and moreover is lower in price. SOLUTION: The optical connector 1 comprises a connector plug 6 for holding a coated optical fiber 3 and a connector socket 8 for holding a coated optical fiber 5. The connector plug 6 has a fiber-holding portion 11 disposed in a plug housing 10, and a fiber-inserting hole 16 is provided in the fiber-holding portion 11. A fiber deflecting space 20 for allowing deflection of the coated optical fiber 3, when the coated optical fibers 3 5 are butted, is provided in the plug housing 10. The connector socket 8 has a fiber-holding portion 25 disposed in a socket housing 24, and a fiber inserting hole 28 is provided in the fiber-holding portion 25. A fiber deflecting space 32 for allowing deflection of the coated optical fiber 5, when the coated optical fibers 3, 5 are butted, is provided in the socket housing 24.
