PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate small damping force for the vibration of a small amplitude and a high damping force for the vibration of a large amplitude in a hydraulic damper for a washing machine. SOLUTION: A piston 3 connected with a piston rod 4 is slidably fitted into a cylinder 2 in which an oil liquid and gas are sealed in a mixed state and immersed in the oil liquid. An elongation-side oil passage 10 and a contraction-side orifice 11 are formed on the bottom of a piston body 7, a contraction-side oil passage 12 and an elongation-side orifice 13 are formed on a cap member 8, and a valve element 14 is axially movably mounted in of the piston 3. As a moving distance of the valve element 14 is small, and the elongation-side and contraction-side oil passages 10, 12 are opened when the amplitude of the piston rod is small, a small damping force is generated, and as the moving distance of the valve element 14 is increased, and the valve element 14 closes the elongation-side and contraction-side oil passages 10, 12, when the amplitude is large, a large damping force is generated by the contraction-side and elongation-side orifices 11, 13.
